Written between 1851 and 1869, Skarlatos Byzantios’s three-volume masterpiece Constantinople Volume I is based on a wide range of disciplines such as political and social history, literature, architecture, epigraphy, urban planning, demography, ethnography, art and folklore, and depicts Istanbul from Byzas to the Tanzimat by drawing on the works of Classical Period, Byzantine, Western European and Ottoman sources. The English translation with commentary and annotation meets the readers for the first time.
